History
The origins of Japanese Manga are often traced back to Choju-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals), created in ancient times. Through the development of Ukiyo-e as popular entertainment in the medieval period and the widespread use of Kamishibai (paper theater) in modern times, Manga gradually evolved into its current form.
From the 1950s onward, beginning with Osamu Tezuka, story-driven Manga with distinctive Japanese characteristics developed independently and flourished.
Japanese Manga is distinguished by its delicate emotional expression, deep and long-form storytelling, creative panel layouts, and a wide range of themes. It also features highly specialized categories for different audiences, from children to adults, both male and female. As a result, Japanese Manga has become a unique form of entertainment found nowhere else in the world.
Today, Japanese Manga also serves as powerful intellectual property, generating significant economic impact and standing as one of Japan’s most representative cultural contents.
