History

Nakano Broadway, located in the heart of Nakano, opened in 1966 as an upscale mixed-use complex. At the time, it was a cutting-edge fashion destination frequented by celebrities. After experiencing a period of decline, the area was revitalized in the 1980s when specialty shops dedicated to anime, manga, and figurines—led by Mandarake—began opening one after another. As a result, Nakano Broadway was reborn as a mecca of Japanese pop-culture, a status it continues to hold today.

The sight of countless unique and unconventional shops packed into its labyrinth-like shopping arcades—unlike anywhere else in Japan—has earned it the nickname “Japan’s Kowloon Walled City,” making it a central hub of otaku culture.

Features

Mandarake is a highly specialized store that has played a leading role in shaping Nakano’s pop-culture scene. Spanning the 2nd to 4th floors of Nakano Broadway, Mandarake is divided into roughly 30 finely curated sections dedicated to anime, manga, figurines, and other pop-culture genres.

For first-time visitors, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. This experience is distinguished by the guidance of a local expert who knows Nakano inside and out, leading you to the shops best suited to your personal interests.

Beyond Mandarake, the tour also introduces galleries, vintage shops, and other unique stores throughout the area—creating a memorable treasure-hunting experience where you’re sure to discover something truly one of a kind, found nowhere else.
