History
The Nikko area is one of Japan’s most historically and culturally significant destinations, known for its deep connection to religion, nature, and the legacy of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Nikko developed as a sacred site as early as the 8th century, when Shodo Shonin founded temples in the area around 766 AD, establishing it as a center of mountain worship where Shinto and Buddhism were harmoniously integrated.
The area gained further prominence in 1617, when Nikko Toshogu Shrine was established to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
The shrine was later expanded in 1636 under the order of the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, resulting in the lavish architectural complex seen today.
Surrounded by mountains and forests, Nikko has long been regarded as a place where nature and spirituality coexist in harmony.
In 1999, the shrines and temples of Nikko were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing their historical and cultural importance.
Today, Nikko remains a destination where visitors can experience both Japan’s historical legacy and its breathtaking natural landscapes.
