History
The Kamakura area is one of Japan’s most historically significant destinations, once serving as the political center of the country during the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
Kamakura rose to prominence when Minamoto no Yoritomo established the first samurai government here, marking the beginning of a new era led by the warrior class.
This period played a crucial role in shaping Japan’s political structure and samurai culture.
The city is also deeply connected to the development of Zen Buddhism, which flourished during this time and influenced not only religion but also Japanese aesthetics, architecture, and philosophy.
Kamakura is home to numerous historic temples and shrines, including Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the most important Shinto shrine in the area, and Kotoku-in, where the iconic Great Buddha (Daibutsu) has stood for centuries as a symbol of peace and resilience.
Surrounded by mountains and the sea, Kamakura developed as a natural fortress, and today it remains a place where rich history, spiritual culture, and scenic beauty coexist in a uniquely compact setting.
