History
The Mt. Fuji and Kawaguchiko area is one of Japan’s most iconic destinations, centered around Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 meters.
Mt. Fuji has been worshipped for more than 1,000 years as a sacred mountain in Japanese culture. Since ancient times, it has been regarded as a spiritual symbol, attracting pilgrims, artists, and travelers who admired its majestic presence.
In 2013, Mt. Fuji was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as “Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration,” recognizing its cultural and spiritual significance rather than only its natural beauty.
The surrounding region, including Lake Kawaguchiko and Oshino Hakkai, developed as important areas where people gathered to admire and worship Mt. Fuji.
Oshino Hakkai, fed by the snowmelt of Mt. Fuji filtered through underground lava layers, has long been considered a sacred water source and is now famous for its crystal-clear ponds.
From Lake Kawaguchiko and other viewpoints, visitors can experience some of the most iconic and photogenic views of Mt. Fuji, including its famous reflection on the lake surface known as “Upside-down Fuji.”
Today, the area remains one of Japan’s most important cultural and natural landscapes, combining spiritual heritage with world-class scenery that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
