History

Originally a marshland, Tsukiji was reclaimed and developed in the early Edo period. The name “Tsukiji” literally means “reclaimed land.” This development marked the beginning of its growth as an extension of Edo’s castle town.

During the Meiji period, the fish markets that had existed in Nihonbashi and central Edo were relocated to Tsukiji, and in 1935, the Tsukiji Market officially opened. From then on, it became known as Tokyo’s “kitchen,” attracting fresh seafood from all over Japan.

Since its opening in 1935, not only the inner wholesale market but also the surrounding streets developed into the Tsukiji Outer Market, with restaurants and specialty shops lining the area.

In 2018, the wholesale operations of Tsukiji Market moved to Toyosu Market, but the outer market remained open.

Today, Tsukiji continues to be a vibrant hub of Japan’s food culture, popular with both tourists and locals alike.

Features

This tour is led by an expert licensed interpreter-guide who will personally introduce you to the Tsukiji area.

Tsukiji is home to some of Japan’s most iconic and popular attractions, including Tsukiji Hongan-ji, Namiyoke Shrine, Namiyoke street. All of these landmarks are within comfortable walking distance, allowing you to explore efficiently and enjoy every highlight without missing anything. Featured in numerous guidebooks, Tsukiji continues to attract visitors from across Japan and around the world.

This experience goes beyond a simple walking tour, offering a deeper understanding of Tsukiji’s cultural and historical essence. For example, Tsukiji Hongan-ji and Namiyoke Shrine stand side by side — but do you know the difference between a Buddhist temple and a Shinto shrine? While both are historic Japanese religious structures, they differ in their spiritual foundations, objects of worship, architectural styles, and methods of prayer. Such cultural nuances, often overlooked during ordinary sightseeing, are explained clearly and engagingly by your expert guide.

Tsukiji is also famous for its fresh seafood, sushi, and tamago-yaki (Japanese omelet). Your guide will tailor the experience to your preferences, whether that means enjoying a culinary stroll or exploring the market’s specialty shops.

A distinctive feature of this tour is its flexibility. Within the allotted time, the itinerary can be adjusted according to your interests, allowing you to experience the charm of Tsukiji both efficiently and in meaningful depth.
