History

Asakusa is one of the oldest districts in Tokyo and can be described as the very origin of Edo culture. Its history dates back approximately 1,400 years to the year 628. According to legend, two fisherman brothers pulled a Buddhist statue from the Sumida River, and it was enshrined at what is now known as Senso-ji. Senso-ji is also the oldest temple in Tokyo.

From that time onward, people naturally gathered around the temple grounds, and a monzen-machi (temple town) developed, where merchants and craftsmen lived and worked. During the Edo period, Asakusa flourished dramatically and became one of the cultural and commercial centers of Japan.Even today, Asakusa remains a symbolic district of Tokyo, where traditional downtown charm blends seamlessly with contemporary culture.

Features

This tour is led by a professional licensed interpreter-guide who will personally introduce you to the Asakusa area.

Asakusa is one of Japan’s most iconic and vibrant districts, home to renowned landmarks such as Kaminarimon, Nakamise Street, Senso-ji, and Asakusa Shrine.

All of these major sites are conveniently located within walking distance, allowing you to explore efficiently and seamlessly without missing any highlights. Frequently featured in guidebooks, Asakusa remains one of the most visited destinations in Japan.

This experience goes beyond a simple walking tour, offering a deeper appreciation of Asakusa’s cultural essence. For instance, Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine stand side by side — yet do you know the difference between a Buddhist temple and a Shinto shrine?

Although both are historic Japanese religious structures, they differ significantly in their spiritual foundations, objects of worship, architectural styles, and methods of prayer. Such cultural nuances, often overlooked during ordinary sightseeing, are clearly and thoughtfully explained by your expert guide.

A distinctive feature of this tour is its flexibility. Within the allotted time, the itinerary can be tailored to your interests. Visits to nearby areas such as Tokyo Skytree or the Sumida River district can also be arranged.

This is a carefully curated experience designed to help you discover the charm of Asakusa both efficiently and in meaningful depth.
